{"id":781,"date":"2010-06-18T04:57:05","date_gmt":"2010-06-18T12:57:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.heynadine.com\/?p=781"},"modified":"2010-06-18T04:57:05","modified_gmt":"2010-06-18T12:57:05","slug":"finding-the-real-bali","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heynadine.com\/new\/finding-the-real-bali\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding the REAL Bali"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After our brief stop over in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, I sneakingly convinced Kristy that a stop over in <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bali, Indonesia<\/span><\/strong> was a must! I had heard so much of it from my grandpa of how wonderful it was, and how amazing the people where. So we settled and off we went, but only for 3 quick days!<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"550\" height=\"338\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/4vHIgp1SY04&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed width=\"550\" height=\"338\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/4vHIgp1SY04&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;\" allowFullScreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>It was actually a rather funny thing, Bali. We had planned Bali to be a lie on the beach and relax destination. We even insisted on a beach front hotel (it&#8217;s was only $55 US a night! a splurge for us) over in <strong>Benoa, Bali.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4022\/4707049313_067eeec35f.jpg\" alt=\"Bali Oasis Hotel 5\" width=\"551\" height=\"413\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, we quickly found that the beaches where, well, less then desirable. I found them no different than the ones at home.<\/p>\n<p>So we decided to head into town to <strong>Kuta Beach<\/strong>, the most famous beach on the island. However, again, expectations of Bali where, well, shattered a bit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4041\/4707693582_883ae63343.jpg\" alt=\"Kuta Beach, Bali 2\" width=\"553\" height=\"414\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All we seem to find was a very crowed, very dirty beaches where we where non stopped haggled for photos and to buy products or services! One lady even started giving Kristy a manicure! Though we told her to stop due to the unsanitary measure of which it was being performed.<\/p>\n<p>After a stroll through the busy Americanized shopping streets in Kuta, we returned to the hotel to sleep after a disappointing first day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4034\/4707692944_0640d1288d.jpg\" alt=\"Kuta, Bali\" width=\"555\" height=\"416\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><em><strong>Was this the real Bali?<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I was determined to prove myself wrong. So that evening I picked up a bunch of travel tour pamphlets and me and Kristy bartered on a great price for a private vehicle for the day to take us around the island.<\/p>\n<p>That was the best decision we had made yet! Although the tour started off very slow, and with a bunch of tourist trap stops to encourage us to buy thing, we finally started see what Bali was really about.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4063\/4707054709_6aedae6f22.jpg\" alt=\"Bali Dragon Carving\" width=\"424\" height=\"565\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Amazing wood Dragon carving, all done by hand. One of the tourist traps the drivers take you on to get you to purchase something from one of the shops, which they will get commission on.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4063\/4707052785_d3d758cd30.jpg\" alt=\"Traditional Balianese Dance 6\" width=\"558\" height=\"417\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4009\/4707694226_36659fa443.jpg\" alt=\"Traditional Balianese Dance 2\" width=\"561\" height=\"419\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On our tour we got to see a culture performance and a traditional Balinese dance.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, around noon is when things started to get good! We headed inland to a more jungle climate in Bali, and we stopped over at our first temple!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4018\/4707697880_40c36ab245.jpg\" alt=\"Elephant Temple 2\" width=\"560\" height=\"419\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Welcome to the <strong>Elephant Cave Temple!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was so excited, now THIS was amazing! XD<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4057\/4707700332_c9019aa2d1.jpg\" alt=\"Indiana Jones\" width=\"422\" height=\"562\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1283\/4707702602_902db388e1.jpg\" alt=\"Lost and Walking...\" width=\"418\" height=\"557\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Lost and wondering down the side streets in Bali after Kristy&#8217;s wonderful navigation skills!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After our Elephant Cave Temple adventure, we drove to the top of a <strong>volcano<\/strong> to have lunch!<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4065\/4707061183_1c30cafd97.jpg\" alt=\"Volcano Nadine and Kristy\" width=\"553\" height=\"414\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4011\/4707060663_1c7c78a6f3.jpg\" alt=\"Volcano Lunch\" width=\"555\" height=\"416\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, we actually didn&#8217;t buy the lunch since they were asking an outrageous tourist price for it. So instead we ordered drinks and enjoyed the view!<\/p>\n<p>After our lunching, we headed over to the <strong>Rice Terraces<\/strong>! Something I have been so excited to see, and this I was definitely not let down.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4033\/4707061609_a158490797.jpg\" alt=\"Bali Rice Paddies\" width=\"555\" height=\"416\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4047\/4707706176_49d9bf7ac6.jpg\" alt=\"Bali Rice Paddies 2\" width=\"555\" height=\"416\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I insisted on visiting the largest one on the island, since they where suppose to be the most spectacular because of the elevation. I agree \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heynadine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Bali-Rice-Paddies-Local-Girls.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-23894\" title=\"Bali Rice Paddies Local Girls\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heynadine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Bali-Rice-Paddies-Local-Girls-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"552\" height=\"413\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Three local girls tagged along side us after seeing our failed attempt at scaling down the terraces! They were wonderful, aside from when they were constantly begging us for cash till they wouldn&#8217;t even leave the side of the van when we had to go until we bought more items; one of the downsides to the tourist spots.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When they eventually did leave, we continued our journey on to a place called the <strong>Monkey Temple<\/strong>, a definite highlight of my whole trip!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4045\/4707707250_31037daab8.jpg\" alt=\"Monkey Temple 2\" width=\"428\" height=\"570\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, we had read up on this place before going and we were advised of the thieving monkeys. Yes, apparently these monkey have been trained to pick pocket and to steal your glasses. Knowing this we approached with caution, kept our bags closed and our eyes on the monkeys!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4030\/4707708894_5cc202dae3.jpg\" alt=\"Monkey Temple 4\" width=\"554\" height=\"414\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4015\/4707065923_e937900aa5.jpg\" alt=\"Spot the Monkeys\" width=\"555\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Spot the monkeys!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But to our surprise, the &#8220;trainers&#8221; were very helpful to us, gave us bread and noodles to feed the monkeys and even advised us away from the aggressive ones.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4054\/4707064889_5b6186dfc1.jpg\" alt=\"Kristy Feeding the Monkey\" width=\"555\" height=\"416\" \/><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4067\/4707065225_07166165b2.jpg\" alt=\"Monkey on my Back\" width=\"555\" height=\"416\" \/><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Is that a monkey on your head?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4048\/4707709876_1d6ddd63f1.jpg\" alt=\"Monkey People?\" width=\"554\" height=\"415\" \/><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Though, we did find these two monkeys, better stay away from them!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last, to end off the evening, we sped off to the<strong> Tanah Lot <\/strong>cliff temples to catch a highly gossiped about sunset.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4024\/4707070531_4c69b9b6d1.jpg\" alt=\"Us at Tanah Lot\" width=\"552\" height=\"414\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1306\/4707712424_29742c6146.jpg\" alt=\"Tanah Lot at Sunset\" width=\"551\" height=\"413\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4041\/4707712110_960452ae92.jpg\" alt=\"Tanah Lot Temple\" width=\"554\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4063\/4707712758_13bbd7ed83.jpg\" alt=\"Tanah Lot at Sunset 2\" width=\"555\" height=\"416\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After the sun was set we trudged back to the hotel to rest up and fly out the next day. Needless to say, Bali grew on me and now that I actually got some time to see what the real Bali was like, I would have liked to spent more time exploring the island, but definitely not lying on the beach.<\/p>\n<p>Well there is always next year \ud83d\ude42 Till then,<strong> Peace out Bali.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">P.S.
