{"id":30913,"date":"2015-02-12T11:04:33","date_gmt":"2015-02-12T19:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.heynadine.com\/?p=30913"},"modified":"2015-02-12T11:04:33","modified_gmt":"2015-02-12T19:04:33","slug":"volunteering-lions-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heynadine.com\/new\/volunteering-lions-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Volunteering with Lions in Africa!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So last week I was invited down to South Africa by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.volunteersa.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><span style=\"color: #b89d1a;\">Volunteer Southern Africa<\/span><\/strong><\/a> to volunteer on a few of their projects.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-30910 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heynadine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/VSA-Logo.png\" alt=\"VSA-Logo\" width=\"210\" height=\"60\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Obviously I said yes as for my first trip to Africa, a volunteer project working with some of Africa&#8217;s most incredible big cats, was a no brainer.<\/p>\n<h2>Living with Big Cats<\/h2>\n<p>http:\/\/youtu.be\/a8i66DHQORg<\/p>\n<p>So the first project with Volunteer Southern Africa was the <strong>Living with Big Cats <\/strong>project, which takes place on a farm about an hour outside of <strong>Johannesburg, South Africa<\/strong>. It&#8217;s our job as volunteers to clean up after them, take care of them, feed and give them exercise and basically the best life we can possibly provide them with in captivity.\u00a0Because unfortunately, they cannot be released back into the wild.<\/p>\n<p>Now one of the benefits of doing all this hard work is as you guess it,\u00a0interaction!\u00a0Some of the animal (<em>not most<\/em>) allow us to be near and even touch them. Now I&#8217;m going to make this very clear: <strong>this is not some glorified petting zoo, and the interaction with humans is just as important and enriching to the animals as it is for us.<\/strong> <strong>Nor is it a lion cub breeding facility.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is not to say the program is perfect, as no situation where animals are in captivity is perfect, but they are doing the best they can and with volunteers help and knowledge they can hopefully make a real difference in the animals lives.
