{"id":28997,"date":"2014-03-26T08:45:02","date_gmt":"2014-03-26T16:45:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.heynadine.com\/?p=28997"},"modified":"2014-03-26T08:45:02","modified_gmt":"2014-03-26T16:45:02","slug":"72-hours-in-chengdu-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/heynadine.com\/new\/72-hours-in-chengdu-china\/","title":{"rendered":"72 hours in Chengdu, China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello again China,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Kuanzhai Ancient Street- Chengdu, China-3.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13414902143\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Kuanzhai Ancient Street- Chengdu, China-3.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2892\/13414902143_bd0a9cd517.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So last week I was invited to go visit <a title=\"Visit Chengdu\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/visitchengdu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chengdu, China<\/strong><\/a> for 72 hours to try out their new <strong>72 hour in-transit VISA.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now for those of you who aren&#8217;t familiar with what a VISA is, basically it&#8217;s<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>a legal document that allows you to enter another country or territory and remain there for a limited duration and under a specific purpose. I.E. to visit, work or study.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To work or study in a foreign country you will almost always need to have a VISA, but to visit you only sometimes need one.<\/p>\n<p>If you require a visiting VISA and it&#8217;s not a\u00a0<strong>visa-on-arrival<\/strong>, meaning you get it at customs, \u00a0you&#8217;ll need to visit that foreign country&#8217;s embassy to obtain it. \u00a0A huge hassle and quite expensive as well, averaging on $20-200 USD per VISA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is\u00a0what\u00a0I had to do<a title=\"Giant Pandas Everywhere\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heynadine.com\/pandas-everywhere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> last time I visited Chengdu<\/a> and <a title=\"Welcome to China!\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heynadine.com\/welcome-to-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">China.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But now, with the introduction of the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelchinaguide.com\/embassy\/visa\/free-72hour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> 72 hour free in-transit VISA<\/strong><\/a>, things are far more simpler.<\/p>\n<p>There are a couple of limitations,<\/p>\n<p>[checklist]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>you cannot leave that <strong>one city<\/strong> you are visiting,<\/li>\n<li>you must have a <strong>departing flight<\/strong> going to a <strong>different country<\/strong> <strong>than which you had arrived from<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/checklist]<\/p>\n<p>However, those are nothing to worry about if you are just looking to experience Chengdu or China for a few days.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">So what did I do with my 72 hours?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/l8-S1CF3X7Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">httpvh:\/\/youtu.be\/l8-S1CF3X7Q<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Day 1 -Yum, Food<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"Lunch - Chengdu, China.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13414452925\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Lunch - Chengdu, China.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3666\/13414452925_784756a264.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first day consisted of a fantastic Chinese buffet style lunch. There I filled up on a variety of local dishes plus got my first taste of <strong>Szechuan Spice<\/strong>, famous from this region of the\u00a0Sichuan\u00a0province. After all, UNESCO\u00a0did declared Chengdu <strong>the city of gastronomy in 2011<\/strong>, so I like to think I am trying the best.<\/p>\n<p>After filling up \u00a0it was off to\u00a0<strong>Kuan Zhai\u00a0Alley.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Kuanzhai Ancient Street- Chengdu, China-2.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13415065634\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Kuanzhai Ancient Street- Chengdu, China-2.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7081\/13415065634_e1ee0ff893.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Kuanzhai Ancient Street- Chengdu, China.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13414688773\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Kuanzhai Ancient Street- Chengdu, China.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7058\/13414688773_cd7007c705.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Kuanzhai Street- Chengdu, China.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13415258634\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Kuanzhai Street- Chengdu, China.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7110\/13415258634_1bcd19c4ee.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kuan Zhai<strong> <\/strong>is<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>a<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>pedestrian area and cultural site consisting of renovated Ming and Qing Dynasty (1644-1911 AD)\u00a0 hutongs.\u00a0These hutongs, which once used to be courtyards houses, are now shops, cafe bars and themed hotels.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Kuanzhai Street- Chengdu, China-2.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13414937775\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Kuanzhai Street- Chengdu, China-2.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8126\/13414937775_ef54912d41.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That evening it was time for another regional tradition, the\u00a0<strong>Sichuan Opera.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Sichuan Opera -Chengdu, China.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13415390595\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Sichuan Opera -Chengdu, China.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3803\/13415390595_8833317f82.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Sichuan Opera<\/strong>\u00a0is a fascinating performance of\u00a0singers and storytellers, with the real star and highlight of the opera being the\u00a0<strong>Face Changing<\/strong>. It&#8217;s quite hard to describe but much easier to show, hence why you should watch the video.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, by using a series of strings a performer dances while wiping away sets of masks on his face, hence the face changing. It truly is something magical to watch as they can switch faces in literally half a second.<\/p>\n<p>For dinner, it was round 2 for the spicy Sichuan foods, this time with a Chengdu favourite: <strong>Hot Pot<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>Basically, you have two boiling flavoured soups over a open flame, that you place meat \u00a0and other items like:<\/p>\n<p>[ezcol_1half]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pork<\/li>\n<li>Lamb<\/li>\n<li>Beef<\/li>\n<li>Duck<\/li>\n<li>Tripe<\/li>\n<li>Meatballs<\/li>\n<li>Shrimp<\/li>\n<li>Dumplings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quails Egg<\/li>\n<li>Rice Cakes<\/li>\n<li>Bamboo<\/li>\n<li>Seaweed<\/li>\n<li>Tofu<\/li>\n<li>Cabbage<\/li>\n<li>Mushrooms<\/li>\n<li>Bean Sprouts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/ezcol_1half_end]<\/p>\n<p>The boiling soups cook the food and then you take each piece out individually and dip them in a mixture of sweet oil, chopped peanuts, garlic and cilantro. A fantastic way to socialize over dinner, since it takes quite awhile to eat.<\/p>\n<h2>Day 2-\u00a0Pandas, Pandas, Pandas<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding - Chengdu, China-2.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13415263195\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding - Chengdu, China-2.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3800\/13415263195_9aba8e752c.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was time for the <strong>#1 thing to do here in Chengdu<\/strong>, visit the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.panda.org.cn\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.panda.org.cn\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding<\/a>\u00a0.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was very excited to come back and see all the new pens and enclosures they have for the pandas, since <a title=\"Giant Pandas Everywhere\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heynadine.com\/pandas-everywhere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the last time I visited<\/a> they were still constructing all new buildings. Oh, and of course, to see the pandas again.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" alt=\"Giant Panda Breeding Base- Chengdu, China.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7057\/13415038385_7d82fd182e.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pandas truly are a remarkable creature. Very picky and awfully stubborn, they are foremost solitary mammals in adulthood and eat a diet of primary bamboo. However, because they have a digestive system of a carnivore they actually get little energy and even less protein from the consumption of bamboo. In regards to mating, their season is between March and May, but they can only reproduce in the time frame of when a female goes into\u00a0estrus, which lasts for two or three days and only occurs once a year. Oh yes, and males tend to loose their libido in captivity, which makes matters even worse.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Giant Panda Breeding Base- Chengdu, China-4.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13415514114\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Giant Panda Breeding Base- Chengdu, China-4.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7150\/13415514114_f97033a332.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although I do wish them the very best in their &#8220;endeavours&#8221; as baby pandas are one of the cutest animals on the planet.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Giant Panda Breeding Base- Chengdu, China-3.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13415128095\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Giant Panda Breeding Base- Chengdu, China-3.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3804\/13415128095_32ea83d925.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon we stopped by \u00a0local park to play the famous Chinese game of\u00a0<b>Mahjong.\u00a0<\/b>It is a four player game which uses tiles and is similar to Rummy and Uno.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The traditional four player game uses 144 rectangular tiles bearing numbers and images. The images represent different suits, and the basic object of the game is to collect similar tiles through picking up and discarding until a player holds a complete set and wins. &#8211; <span style=\"color: #000000;\">[<a href=\" http:\/\/www.ehow.com\/list_6180903_games-similar-mahjong.html#ixzz2wKQwXc7h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">source<\/span><\/a>]<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although it is a slight bit confusing at first, since you need to learn to read Chinese numbers, Mahjong was quite an enjoyable way to spend the afternoon in Chengdu.<\/p>\n<h2>Day 3-\u00a0Temple and More Temples<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"Wenshu Monastry- Chengdu, China-7.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13415989234\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Wenshu Monastry- Chengdu, China-7.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3774\/13415989234_8d871e1b9e.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s time for some architecture and history.<\/p>\n<p>First temple was the <strong>Wenshu Monastery,<\/strong> Chengdu&#8217;s oldest and largest temple. It also happens to be the\u00a0best preserved Buddhist temple in Chengdu and is home to the Buddhist Association of the Sichuan Province and Chengdu City.<\/p>\n<p>[ezcol_1half] <a title=\"Wenshu Monastry- Chengdu, China-4.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13415664233\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Wenshu Monastry- Chengdu, China-4.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2851\/13415664233_e2474e2320.jpg\" width=\"266\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>[\/ezcol_1half]\u00a0[ezcol_1half_end]<a title=\"Wenshu Monastry- Chengdu, China.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13415810594\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Wenshu Monastry- Chengdu, China.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2825\/13415810594_ec0a1bbf37.jpg\" width=\"266\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>[\/ezcol_1half_end]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" alt=\"Wenshu Monastry- Chengdu, China-2.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2869\/13415843044_61d57d9bb7.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It even comes complete with a pagoda. I really like pagodas.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Wenshu Monastry- Chengdu, China-5.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13415591865\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Wenshu Monastry- Chengdu, China-5.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7254\/13415591865_1de1680653.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last stop on day 3 was to go to the very famous <strong>Jinli Street<\/strong>. \u00a0Jinli was one of the busiest commercial areas during the Shu Kingdom (221-263 AD) and has since been remodelled on the architectural style of a traditional old town in the western Sichuan Province from the Qing Dynasty.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-23.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13416501705\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-23.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3780\/13416501705_5d50d67f4c.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-7.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13415997995\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-7.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2870\/13415997995_ee07949d3a.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-22.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13416460475\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-22.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2926\/13416460475_5c0981278d.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the best things to do in Jinli is to stroll down food street. \u00a0There is literally stall after stall of traditional Sichuan dishes for you to taste, and I\u00a0just so happen to go at the perfect time: lunchtime!\u00a0I wanted to try them all, and I was actually quite successful.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" alt=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-3.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3745\/13415835645_8c552f2d2b.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Most were delicious, exciting flavours, but a few&#8230; well I could definitely pass on the bean curds and spring rolls.<\/p>\n<p>I also dabbed in a bit of bubble tea; \u00a0green milk tea with tapioca pearls, heavenly.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-24.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13416887714\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-24.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5221\/13416887714_b02d54c64e.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Parallel to the food alley in Jinli was the <strong>Wuhou Shrine<\/strong>,\u00a0\u00a0THE major shrine to Sichuan\u2019 s ancient past as the Shu Kingdom and to the heroes that made it legendary during the Three Kingdoms period (220\u2013280 AD) .<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-18.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13416359335\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-18.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7229\/13416359335_d03de1a2b7.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" title=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-21.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13416542943\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-21.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7101\/13416542943_30734c4524.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It always surprises me how much green space there is in Chengdu, since it is a city of over 8 million people. It&#8217;s huge, and so are it&#8217;s parks.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-13.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13416553244\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-13.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5137\/13416553244_ec3430c3a5.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also caught the shrine in the perfect light; the sun was setting on a beautiful, sunny, spring day.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-17.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/33736956@N08\/13416446693\/\" rel=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-17.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2938\/13416446693_435c572330.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" alt=\"Jinli Street- Chengdu, China-20.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3758\/13416380185_8004e32e3e.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So I was told Jinli Street was beautiful during the day, and as you can see that is indeed the case.
