Finding Nemo- Scuba Diving The Great Barrier Reef

Check one off the bucket list. Even though I don’t officially have a bucket list, if I did this would most likely be on it.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef and  is one of the seven wonders of the natural world. It is larger than the Great Wall of China and the only living thing on earth visible from space.

The reef contains an abundance of marine life and comprises of over 3000 individual reef systems and coral cays and literally hundreds of picturesque tropical islands with some of the worlds most beautiful sun-soaked, golden beaches.[-thegreatbarrierreef.org]

To get out to the Great Barrier Reef we took a Reef Magic Cruise to their Marine World platform from which we could dive and snorkel off.

Once there, I took part in two dives. Now to whoever thinks that one dive is sufficient to see the reef –  think again.

I highly recommend the second dive. Since for your first dive you are still trying to figure out your scuba gear, take photos and get comfortable with your surroundings, and you are underwater. So before you know it,  your first dive is over.

Hence why your second dive really lets you sit back and experience the spectacular settings you are here to see.

It’s crazy to see the variety and sheer numbers of fish, coral and living organisms there are on the reef. I have swam is many oceans before, most of which you are very lucky if you actually get to spot a single fish.

Scuba diving was quite a bit easier than I expected. I had snorkeled before so I was used to breathing out of my mouth, and as soon as you get your ears equalized you are good to go!

  1. I have been snorkeling a few places before, but never scuba… and this makes me really want to do it. Australia and the reefs are just beautiful and incredible. I can’t believe those big giant fish let people like touch them and stuff.. I have never seen anything like that! Thanks for the suggestion about planning multiple dives… I will definitely take that advice whenever I finally get to go scuba. 🙂
